By Peter Casey Wall, CTP, Chief Operating Officer, North Start Title Agency

In 2025, the threat level in the cybersecurity landscape remains high. Cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated, using advanced technologies like AI, quantum computing, and deepfake voices to deceive individuals and businesses. North Star Title Agency is here to inform you about the latest cybersecurity trends and provide tools to protect your personal and financial information.

AI-Generated Fraud

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing industries, but it also empowers cybercriminals. Fraudsters use AI to create automated phishing scams, spread malware, and support cyberattacks. They develop realistic-looking fraudulent emails, fake websites, and bogus text messages. To mitigate risks, follow these proactive measures:

  • Use complex, unique passwords
  • Enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts
  • Keep passwords and login information private
  • Avoid accessing sensitive accounts on public Wi-Fi networks
  • Regularly update operating systems and security software
  • Clear cache and browsing history
  • Avoid untrustworthy or suspicious websites

Always verify the sender of suspicious emails or text messages before taking action and avoid clicking on any links in these messages.

Quantum AI Investment Scams

Quantum computing, combined with AI, enhances data analysis and problem-solving capabilities. Cybercriminals exploit this technology to create quantum AI investment scams, promising high returns on fake investment opportunities. They use fake news articles, bogus testimonials, and deepfake videos to lure unsuspecting investors. To avoid falling victim:

  • Be skeptical of investment opportunities that sound too good to be true
  • Be cautious of news articles, videos, and social media posts with links to unknown websites
  • Avoid email signup lists advertising unrealistic investment returns

Spear Phishing

Spear phishing targets individuals and businesses with personalized messages. Fraudsters research their targets to craft credible-looking emails from familiar sources. To spot spear phishing scams, look for:

  • Emails from unusual sending addresses
  • Text messages from unknown senders
  • Emails with poor grammar or spelling errors
  • Spammy phone calls

Be especially cautious if you are asked to act quickly and provide personal or financial information.

Deepfake Voice Scams

Cybercriminals use AI to create realistic voice recordings of celebrities, company employees, or even friends and family members. They make robocalls to solicit personal information or money. To avoid deepfake voice scams:

  • Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers
  • Never give out personal or business information over the phone
  • Hang up if you hear unnatural speech patterns or long pauses
  • Verify the caller’s identity and check it online
  • Report suspected scam phone numbers to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
  • Add your phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry at https://www.donotcall.gov

Formjacking

Formjacking involves injecting malicious code into website forms to steal sensitive information. To protect yourself:

  • Confirm the legitimacy of websites or apps you use
  • Avoid websites that lack HTTPS data encryption

Business owners should create a secure online environment by using website firewalls, implementing input validation on online forms, and using the latest security software.
